Who We Are
The Winthrop Elementary School is truly a gem in the Dorchester/ Roxbury neighborhood. We are a small elementary school and strive to have positive home-school relationships with every Winthrop family! As in any school, it is the people and their relationships that make our school community special. Every teacher and staff member cares deeply about the students and does his/her part to assure that children are nurtured, supported, and taught within a respectful and safe learning environment. We have tremendous community support from area universities, community organizations, non-profits, and corporations, and these partnerships afford us resources and additional supports to go the extra mile for our students. Our families are also our partners and together, we can assure that every child is well-prepared for the future after his/her time at the Winthrop School.
Winthrop students are a truly special bunch! They are respectful and excited about learning and come to school on time and ready to learn. Our students come to us from neighborhoods throughout the city of Boston, including Dorchester, Roxbury, the South End, Mission Hill, Back Bay, Downtown Boston, East Boston, Charlestown, and Allston/Brighton.
380 students attend the John Winthrop School, and we have 18 homeroom classrooms. We offer a K1 program for 4 year olds, and our school progresses to grade 5. We are also quite proud of our Advanced Work Class (AWC) for grade 4-5 students who have demonstrated an ability to move at an accelerated pace and are working toward an exam school placement.
