This morning, we celebrated our fifth grade class and their accomplishments throughout their time at the Winthrop School. We wish our students well as they move on to middle school!
Third grade classes held end of the year publishing parties last week, sharing their persuasive writing with classmates, parents, and friends. Listening to these students' arguments for going on special vacations, investing in new toys and games, and having sleep-overs definitely had parents re-examing their previous decisions!
Miss Heidi & Mr. Tom have completed their work in our Winthrop cafeteria...for the most part! Miss Heidi will return over the summer to add some finishing touches to our steps, after Mr. Green repaints the floor. We invite families to stop by to take a look - it really is quite a transformation! Big thanks to Heidi & Tom! (Additional photos document their progress in an earlier blog entry.)
As you may know, our ELL (English Language Learner) population has been steadily growing at the Winthrop School. Many of our students are native Spanish, Portugese, Cape Verdean Creol, and Mandarin speakers. Ms. Sheila Larson is our current ELL teacher, and we are thrilled to announce that Mr. Sean Brooks will be joining her in September. Both teachers are also certified in Special Education and skilled in providing intensive intervention support to our students.
Mr. Brooks has been teaching at the Dever School, another BPS school, for several years. He brings enthusisam, expertise, and energy with him to the Winthrop...as well as knowledge of three languages! However, prior to joining our Winthrop team, Mr. Brooks has another important task before him...carrying the Olympic torch! Click here to read more about Mr. Brooks' special honor.
Please help us welcome Mr. Brooks to the Winthrop School!
This year, the Smart Smiles Dental Program, which is a part of Boston University's School of Dental Medicine, visited the Winthrop School several times. During their visits, they were able to provide our students with the following care:
Today was an incredible day to be a Winthrop School student, staff member, parent, or principal! Please click on "Winthrop Events & Activities" to re-live today's Field Day in photos! Mayor Menino even came by to make a special announcement!
Tonight, Winthrop faculty hosted a Summer Reading Fair to generate enthusiasm about summer reading. Families had the opportunity to create their own bookshelves, make bookmarks, win prizes (books!), and talk to teachers about summer reading expectations. I can't think of a better way for families to come together than sharing reading!
Did you know that we offer karate classes afterschool at the WInthrop? One of our Winthrop parents, who owns his own studio, offers on-site karate instruction for Winthrop students once a week for a very reasonable price. Be sure you look for more information in the fall so that your child can take advantage of this great opportunity!
Ms. Parker's class has been writing some really fun poetry over the last few weeks. Watch for more additions in the coming days!
